Speaking of choking...

Rarely have I been as pleased as when I heard Michelle Kwan wouldn't be competing in the Olympics. I've heard more than I needed to hear in a lifetime about the skating also-ran. She's been heralded as the queen of figure skating, but she has never won a gold medal. Obviously, we were saved a Kwanathon of coverage from NBC with her early withdrawal. Hours after her announcement, the network ran a special look back at her career. Had it been a feature on her gold medals, it would have been appropriate in length.

Just when you think you can, you KWAN'T!!!

Michelle Kwan is one of the greatest atheltes to ever compete in the Olympics for the United States.
Sometimes, winning gold isn't the best way to judge an athelte's greatness.

Dan Marino

"Michelle Kwan means more to the United States Olympic Committee than maybe any athlete that's ever performed for the United States Olympic Committee."
So says USOC chair Peter Ueberroth, whom I used to respect.
A columnist for a fellow Gannett paper has similar confused thoughts, asking who has generated this much buzz for the Olympics for this long. Um, the media? Kwan hasn't generated anything but disappointing finishes. He goes on to say the 1980 hockey team was a one-Olympic treat. Uh, yea, and it is generating not only buzz but MOVIES nearly 30 years later.
